Brooke Banner is a caring stepmother who feels anxious about her stepson, Michael Swayze. He is consistently needy and resistant to socializing with others. While many young people fear being smothered by their parents, it seems Michael actually craves it!
As she discusses this with a friend over the phone, she comes to the realization that the situation is serious and requires action. An idea sparks in her mind, prompting her to end the conversation.
Later, Brooke sits down with Michael to watch television. He appears content, but when Brooke suggests he should consider dating a nice girl instead of just spending time with her, he reacts with a fit of anger. Although initially taken aback, her instincts as a mother take over, and she comforts him by embracing him closely.
Michael eventually confesses that he fears a romantic relationship because he believes he could never love anyone else as deeply as he loves Brooke. This affection goes beyond mere familial bonds. However, now that he’s shared this, he panics about damaging his connection with Brooke, resulting in yet another emotional outburst.
Now that Brooke understands her stepson more, she’s ready to do what it takes to help him work through his feelings. In order to prove that their relationship is still strong and to help him calm down, Brooke decides to give him a little extra love. Maybe once she’s worked out all that energy, he’ll finally stop overwhelming her?
